Daugavpils Accordion Orchestra was established in 1959 on the basis of a musical
school of Daugavpils (Latvia), the first chief of the orchestra was Georgy Skakun.
Since 1964 the head of the orchestra there is Valery Khodukin,
a graduate of faculty orchestral conduction of the
Leningrad state institute of culture.
He began pedagogical activity in 1964 as a teacher of musical school and college of Daugavpils.
For years of job he brings up many talented musicians, winners of the International competitions.
Pedagogical and concert activity Valery Khodukin combined with preparation
and development of the methodical
manuals, abstracts issued by a methodical study of educational institutions.
Under his conducting during 35 years the
orchestra leads active musical-educational and performing activity.
In structure of the orchestra - students and teachers
of musical school, college, university. Many years concertmasters
of the orchestra are Andrei Zelch (piano), Nickolai
Lebedev (percussion instruments), Valentin Margevich (bass-guitar),
Sergei Petrov (bass).
By these people (V. Khodukin, A. Zelch, N. Lebedev, V. Margevich)
the instrumental ensemble "Scale", in a basis of
which creativity - popular variety and jazz music, was created;
many years the collective cooperated with the known
jazz singer, winner of the International competition Olga Pirags.
Formation and the development of the Orchestra up to the conventional level,
is related with creation and
development of concert repertoire revealing the nature and the opportunities of the accordion.
The orchestra successfully opens those genres of music,
which connect accordion to classical musical instruments,
strengthens accordion performing art, already received general recognition.
In repertoire of the orchestra over hundred
compositions, they differ in breadth of a stylistic and genre range,
riches of directions and composers names. The special
place in the concert programs is taken by the compositions of the Latvian composers.
The presence in city of strong
concert collective enables the students both graduates of college and university to be improved,
to raise a performing level.
In 1976 the orchestra became the winner of the first Republican competition
of accordion orchestras and ensembles of
musical schools, its concert performances were held in all Latvia and abroad.
In 1987 to the orchestra the honourable
rank "National collective" is given. The orchestra constantly improves performing culture,
professional and creative level.
The orchestra is participant of city and district Holidays of songs and dances,
repeatedly took part in recordings the
musical programs of Republican radio and TV.
The geography of concert trips extended, the performances of the orchestra
in many cities and countries have brought
to collective popularity and recognition of a musical public.
Orchestra is participant of many international accordion music festivals in Daugavpils
(1989, 1991, 1993, 1995, 1997,
1999, 2001, 2003). It was repeatedly awarded with the diplomas on the International
festivals and concerts in Denmark,
Poland, Czechoslovakia, Lithuania, Byelorussia, Russia, Finland.
The active concert activity of the accordion orchestra of Daugavpils lifts prestige
of accordion in republic, and the
participation in the International festivals held in Daugavpils,
gives to these events the special colour.
